Management Information Systems

Management Information Systems (MIS): The intersection of technology and business

Nearly 25 years ago, Bill Gates predicted: " Information technology and business are becoming inextricably interwoven. I don’t think anybody can talk meaningfully about one without the talking about the other." (Bill Gates, 1999).

Have you ever questioned how people can operate a giant system, such as how a bank with thousands of employees and hundreds of branches can manage trillions of dollars and conduct millions of transactions every day? Such kind of process must be really complicated.

Amazon has overtaken Walmart to become the world's largest retailer with a market value of more than $1.8 trillion. This marks an important milestone in the history of world business as the largest "online" supermarket has surpassed the largest "traditional" supermarket. In Vietnam, e-commerce platforms such as Tiki, Lazada, and Shopee are becoming more and more popular.

Imagine you are about to finish building a new house and are about to buy furniture. Without even surfing online, you have seen on your Facebook many ads of furniture stores. The explanation for Facebook's "superintelligence" is that algorithms, artificial intelligence, and other technological applications make it possible for Facebook to process a huge amount of data and information of more than 2.7 billion Facebookers every day. This process is generated every day, thereby directing the ads to the right audience at the right time. It could be said that Data are new oil; Artificial Intelligence is the new electricity. In 2012, the Harvard Business Review stated that Data Scientist would be the most attractive profession of the 21st century.

The above stories are all related to a very attractive training programme at HUB, which is Management Information Systems (MIS).

MIS is a combination of information systems (IS) and management (M). IS includes information technology (IT), process, and people. IT includes hardware, software, networks, and data. This is considered an intersection between information technology and business management with a very large scope of application and demand of the labor market. Therefore, MIS offers many high-paying jobs in a modern environment and opportunities for advancement not only in the field of information technology but also in the fields of economics and management.

“Choosing Management Information Systems, you have chosen the right industry in line with the Industry 4.0. Thus, you will gain more competitive advantage in the domestic and foreign labor market”
