Ho Chi Minh City at a glance
Today the economic heart of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh (HCMC) or Saigon is a large city that is often chaotic and noisy like many of its Asian sisters. The flow of scooters in the main avenues never seems to stop and such excitement can scare travelers who come to visit the beauties of Vietnam.
A beautiful urban stroll combining the discovery of the hidden colonial architectural treasures of Saigon and its legendary street food, will allow you to understand the fascinating history of this endearing city in an original way. In addition to visiting iconic colonial buildings such as Notre-Dame Cathedral, the central post office whose framework was designed by Gustave Eiffel, the opera with its portal resembling the Petit Palais in Paris and the town hall, certainly the most beautiful from Vietnam. With this experience, you will discover colonial remains and places that have marked the recent history of the city in a more confidential way.
Temples that have combined Confucianism and Chinese animism for centuries, pagodas saturated with arabesques of incense smoke, Cham mosques of immaculate whiteness, churches soberly dressed in stone contrasting with the flashy kitsch of the Caodaist temples. As you stroll through the streets of Saigon you will be surprised by this spiritual eclecticism and by the attachment of the Saigon people to the spiritual dimension of their daily life, despite the effervescence of modern life. A truly unique spiritual mix.
What to see and do in and around HCMC?
1. A walk in Đồng Khởi street and its surroundings
Dong Khoi Street (formerly Catinat) is the heart of the French Quarter in HCMC. It is also the most prestigious and expensive street where there are 5-star hotels and luxury boutiques. The cost of one square meter of land on this street can reach 8000 usd.
A walk down the street in the shade of tall trees is very pleasant. If you like to walk, it is easy to visit the main attractions of the city on foot, from Đồng Khởi Street.
2. Nguyen Hue Walking Street
It is a well-known pedestrian street in HCMC . The street is particularly beautiful a week before the Tet holiday when it is decorated with thousands of colorful flowers from the Mekong Delta.
In the afternoon, there are often small shows organized by young people from Saigon. A walk in the street is therefore relatively pleasant. Moreover, young people prefer to admire the city from above, in one of the friendly cafes in building number 42 on the street, called the paradise of cafes.
Nguyen Hue Street runs parallel to Dong Khoi Street. It starts at City Hall and goes all the way to the Saigon River.
3. The Independence Palace
It is an essential site, to better understand the history of HCMC and the reunification of Vietnam.
Visitors will see the tools used in the daily life of the President of the Republic of Vietnam during the Vietnam War .
4. China Town and Temple of the Heavenly Lady
China Town is one of many people' favorite places in HCMC, where the commercial activities are very lively, the streets are colorful, the temples and pagodas are numerous and the food is good. China Town, or Cho lon is a neighborhood of the Vietnamese community of Chinese origin.
Cho lon was once a separate city from Saigon. The two cities were merged on April 27, 1931 under the name Saigon-Cholon. This name was reduced to Saigon in 1956.
Once in Cho lon, you cannot miss the visit to the Temple of the Heavenly Lady, which plays an important role in the cultural and religious life of the Hoa (Vietnamese of Chinese origin). It is one of the oldest temples in HCMC. It is dedicated to Thien Hau, protector of sailors. The incense hanging in the temple brings us a mystical feeling.
5. A walk to Ben Thanh Market
Ben Thanh is a well-known market for tourists. It has existed for over 100 years and is an architectural symbol of the southern megalopolis.
You can find everything there: souvenirs, clothes, shoes, food, etc. It is also a good place to practice the art of negotiation.
6. Taste typical dishes of HCMC
One cannot miss good food during your stay in HCMC. You will soon discover that almost all dishes have a mild sugary-sweet taste. Here are some dishes to try: banh xeo (Vietnamese crepe), pho, hu tieu (Saigon soup), bun thit nuong (rice vermicelli topped with pieces of grilled pork)...
7. Discovery of the Củ Chi tunnels
The visit to the Cu Chi tunnels is relatively interesting and requires half a day. It is a huge system of underground tunnels first created by the Viet Minh under French Indochina and then developed during the Vietnam War. The tunnel reached some 250 km in length. Access to visit tunnels is about 40 km from the city center. Visitors often combine the visit of the tunnels with that of the seat of the Cao Dai religion in Tây Ninh.
8. Visit the Mekong Delta
The Mekong Delta is an exceptional region where almost all the activities of the inhabitants depend on the river. Taking a small boat to discover a floating market is an essential thing in the Mekong Delta. Visitors come to observe a real floating market and it is often early in the morning. Guaranteed atmosphere when the granny in front of you comes to fill her boat with potatoes or when you order a Banh Mi from a lady who makes the sandwiches on her boat!
